(Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) CBT for Trauma
Mental health is an important part of our well-being and here at NI Counselling we offer many different strands of Support to those looking for help with Trauma; including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT for Trauma).
Traumatic life events can happen in anyone’s life and can leave a very severe impact on anyone who experiences them. A past or on-going traumatic event, such as domestic violence, physical or sexual abuse, can make it difficult for survivors of trauma to trust anything or anyone, however, trauma-focused CBT helps to address the mental and emotional needs of people living with trauma who have a difficult time trying to overcome traumatic events.
So how is CBT different to that of other Therapies?
- It is very much a pragmatic therapy. It allows you to focus on very specific problems / issues and helps you to try and solve them.
- It is highly structured. Rather than talking about your life’s problems, you and your therapist will look at specific problems as mentioned above and your therapist will set you objectives to meet on a regular basis.
- CBT Treatment is generally short term because it is focused on specific objectives and treatment techniques are laid out in a clear plan which the therapist sets out for the patient.
- It is very much about the present, rather than focusing on past events.
- Your therapist will more than likely give you homework / exercises to do between counselling sessions. This could be for example, practising the skills you have learnt in therapy or keeping a journal / diary of your thoughts and emotions during the ‘putting into practice’ period of what you have been learning with your therapist.
