Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) was developed by psychologist Marsha Linehan and is one of the most extensively researched therapeutic approaches available. Originally developed for people experiencing chronic suicidal thoughts and borderline personality disorder, DBT has since been shown to be highly effective for a wide range of presentations involving emotional dysregulation, self-harm, trauma and difficulties in relationships. DBT is built on the core idea that two things can be true at once: you are doing the best you can, and you need to change. It combines acceptance-based strategies drawn from mindfulness and Buddhist principles with practical skills for changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours.
Acceptance
DBT begins with radical acceptance, learning to acknowledge your experience as it is without judgment or resistance. This is not about approving of what has happened, but about stopping the exhausting fight against reality that keeps suffering alive.
Change
Alongside acceptance, DBT provides a structured set of practical skills across four core areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. These skills are designed to be used in real life, not just in the therapy room.
How DBT Can Help You
Specialised support for a wide range of emotional and psychological challenges.
Self-Harm and Crisis
DBT is one of the most evidence-based approaches for reducing self-harm and suicidal behaviour, replacing crisis responses with a toolkit of safer, more effective coping strategies.
Trauma and PTSD
DBT provides the stabilisation and skills foundation that many people need before deeper trauma processing work can begin, helping you build internal safety and resilience.
