EMDR: process the memories that are keeping you stuck.

EMDR is a powerful, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain complete the processing of traumatic memories that have become stuck, reducing their emotional charge and freeing you from their grip on the present.

What is EMDR?

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy that uses bilateral stimulation, typically guided eye movements, to help the brain process traumatic or distressing memories that have not been fully integrated. When a memory is inadequately processed, it remains stored in a raw, emotionally charged form that can be triggered by reminders in everyday life. EMDR enables the brain to complete its natural processing, transforming how the memory is stored so that it loses its power to distress you in the present. It is recommended by NICE as a first-line treatment for PTSD.

Bilateral Stimulation

During EMDR, your therapist guides you through sets of eye movements or other bilateral stimulation while you hold a traumatic memory in mind. This process mimics what happens during REM sleep, enabling the brain to reprocess the memory and integrate it into your normal memory system.

Adaptive Information Processing

EMDR is built on the Adaptive Information Processing model, which proposes that psychological difficulties arise when memories are stored in a way that prevents natural healing. By enabling proper processing, EMDR allows the brain to do what it is naturally designed to do.
