What is Solution Focused Therapy?

What is Solution Focused Therapy?

Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) was developed by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg and is built on the principle that extended analysis of problems is not always necessary for change to occur. Instead, SFT directs attention towards solutions, strengths, and what is already working. Clients are encouraged to imagine the future they want and to identify the steps, resources, and past successes that can help them get there. It is a collaborative, respectful, and often surprisingly rapid approach that is particularly well suited to people with clear goals who want practical, forward-focused support rather than in-depth exploration of the past.

Focus on Solutions, Not Problems

SFT deliberately shifts attention away from the problem and towards the solution. Rather than spending time understanding why a difficulty developed, your therapist helps you identify what a better future looks like and what strengths and resources you already have to move towards it.

Building on What Works

SFT operates on the assumption that you already have the resources needed for change. Your therapist helps you identify exceptions to the problem, times when things have worked better, and builds on those existing strengths rather than introducing entirely new frameworks or skills.
