Understanding Low Self-Esteem and Its Roots

Understanding Low Self-Esteem and Its Roots

Where Low Self-Worth Comes From

Low self-esteem is almost always learned rather than innate. Messages received in childhood from caregivers, teachers or peers, experiences of criticism or neglect, comparison, bullying, or being consistently made to feel not good enough all contribute to the development of core beliefs about your worth as a person. These beliefs are deeply held and feel like simple facts, but they are not. They are conclusions drawn from a limited sample of experience and they can be changed.

How Low Self-Esteem Affects Your Life

Low self-worth shapes choices across every domain of life. It affects who you allow yourself to be in relationships, what you believe you are capable of professionally, whether you advocate for your own needs, and how much joy and possibility you permit yourself to experience. Therapy addresses these patterns at their root rather than offering surface-level positivity that does not stick.

Expert Methodologies for Lasting Relief

We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. We utilize the gold standard of evidence-based psychological interventions.

Identifying Core Beliefs

Low self-esteem is maintained by specific, deeply held beliefs about your worth and lovability. Using schema-focused and CBT approaches, we carefully identify those beliefs and trace them to their origins, creating the understanding and distance needed to begin genuinely updating them.

Building an Evidence Base for Worth

Core beliefs persist because the mind filters evidence in their favour. We work with you to actively build an evidence base that challenges your self-limiting beliefs, using real experiences and qualities to construct a more accurate and more generous account of who you actually are.

Compassion-Focused Work

Most people with low self-esteem treat themselves with a harshness they would never direct at another person. Compassion-focused therapy helps you develop a genuinely kinder internal voice, replacing self-criticism with a warm, honest relationship with yourself that provides a stable foundation for lasting change.
